Dreaming America: Voices of Undocumented Youth in Maximum-Security Detention

by CAIR Coalition Staff

"Dreaming America: Voices of Undocumented Youth in Maximum-Security Detention" includes the poetry of unaccompanied immigrant children detained in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. These children participated in weekly writing workshops devised and led by poet Seth Michelson. The "crimes" of these teens: entering the U.S. without papers.

Edited by Michelson, and with a preface by Jimmy Santiago Baca, “Dreaming America” is a gesture of hospitality, an invitation to Americans to share in the lives of children who believe in the United States as a land of hope.

These young people are facing prolonged detention and deportation but U.S. federal law does not guarantee them the right to appointed counsel. In an effort to secure legal representation, profits from book sales will be donated directly to the Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights (CAIR) Coalition.
