Detention Hotline Volunteering

Detention Hotline

Please note that in-office hotline volunteering is on hold in order to protect the health and safety of staff, volunteers, and staff in light of COVID-19. Hotline trainings will take place remotely once per week, with remote hotline volunteer opportunities explained to attendees at that time.

The CAIR Coalition in-office detention hotline allows detained immigrants wishing to contact CAIR Coalition to call our staff for free, Monday-Friday, 9am - 5pm. Volunteers help detainees access legal services by connecting callers with CAIR Coalition staff; delivering follow-up messages relating to individual detainees' cases; and providing information about CAIR Coalition's upcoming jail visits.

Elementary proficiency in Spanish is required. CAIR Coalition requires all Detention Hotline volunteers to be at the A2 proficiency level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). While the mandatory hotline training session will cover how to use CAIR Coalition's phone system and database, a basic level of comfort with phones and computers is highly encouraged.
