Who We Are: 

The Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights (CAIR) Coalition strives to ensure equal justice for all immigrant adults and children at risk of detention and deportation in the Capital region area and beyond through direct legal representation, know your rights presentations, impact litigation, advocacy, and the enlistment and training of attorneys to defend immigrants. 

Internship Description: 

CAIR Coalition is looking for an undergraduate or graduate student to support our staff across both our Development and Volunteer Coordination departments. The internship will provide the opportunity to learn and work in a wide range of projects centered on nonprofit development, volunteer recruitment and outreach, database management, and event-planning. 

Responsibilities: 

Volunteer Coordination (40%) 

  • Participate in recruitment events, training sessions, and occasional volunteer shifts across CAIR Coalition’s detention hotline, jail visit, and translation/interpretation volunteer programs 

  • Research and develop new potential volunteer opportunities 

  • Liaise with external volunteer programs to develop best practices, and with community-based organizations to expand volunteer outreach 

  • Other administrative tasks as needed 

Development (40%) 

  • Utilize fundraising database with donor and prospect information 

  • Prepare receipts and acknowledgement letters for gifts received 

  • Research and identify new potential avenues for funding 

  • Assist with Spring fundraising campaign and events 

  • Other administrative tasks as needed 

Community and Digital Outreach (20%) 

  • Manage incoming requests for information from community partners and potential volunteers, and periodically update web-based recruitment materials 

  • Assist with social media and website management 

  • Attend outreach and fundraising events, occasionally on evenings and weekends 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree 

  • Must be 18 or older 

  • Spanish proficiency is helpful, but not required 

  • Ability to work with diverse populations 

  • Ability to work independently and a part of a team 

  • Ability to respond quickly to events as they arise 

  • Highly organized and self-motivated 

  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills 

Beginning date of internship: January 27, 2020

Time commitment: 15-20 hours per week in our Washington, DC office 

Location: Washington, DC 

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship.
