Who We Are:

The Capital Area Immigrants' Rights Coalition helps to orient and represent adults and children detained and in immigration proceedings in Virginia and Maryland. We provide group legal orientations on the detention and removal process, explaining the rights of detained immigrants and the legal options available to them.

Start and End Date: September 2019 to December 2019

Time commitment: Part-time (15-20 hours a week), Full Time

Preferred days: Monday, Tuesday and Friday

General Responsibilities:

  • Assist on preparation and breakdown for weekly jail visit
  • Staff and answer questions on the Detention Hotline
  • Research political, economic, and social country conditions articles for pro se asylum applicants
  • Assist directly with translating, preparing, and submitting documents to immigration court on behalf of pro se respondents
  • Prepare other informational materials distributed at each jail visit
  • Prepare respondents for immigration court proceedings

Occasional Responsibilities:

  • Go on a jail visit to one or more of five facilities we visit
  • Observe immigration court hearings
  • Provide training and support for volunteers
  • Participate in reviewing intakes and providing appropriate information to respondents
  • Attend training opportunities within the office
  • Expand our country conditions database


  • Must be 18 or older
  • Spanish not required, but is a plus
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Ability to work well both individually and as part of team
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people
  • Detail oriented
  • Self-starter
