ABOUT CAIR COALITION:
The Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition (CAIR Coalition) strives to ensure equal justice for all immigrant adults and children at risk of detention and deportation in the DC metropolitan area and beyond through direct legal representation, know your rights presentations, impact and advocacy work, and the enlistment and training of attorneys to defend immigrants. Originally started as a project of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, CAIR Coalition became an independent non-profit organization in 1999. In the last decade, CAIR Coalition has more than doubled in size and has added two new programs to complement our original work serving detained adult immigrants. The Detained Children’s Program assists unaccompanied immigrant children in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement in juvenile facilities in Maryland and Virginia, and the Immigration Impact Lab seeks to address the injustices of the detention and deportation system through appeals and class action litigation that has the potential to improve the law for broad groups of immigrants.
Pivotal Moment at CAIR Coalition
CAIR Coalition has experienced significant revenue growth over the last few years, particularly through our new individual major donor program, “Defenders of Dignity,” for donors who contribute $1,000 or more annually to the organization. Working with a team of dedicated consultants, we have achieved growth and matured our development infrastructure with the goal of bringing on a top-notch Director of Development to guide our next phase of growth. The individual who assumes this position will be afforded the opportunity to build-out a development team over time and will add their own personal touch to CAIR Coalition’s development efforts. We want and expect the Director to implement aggressive fundraising strategies and tactics within their first six months and to further major donor stewardship and cultivation within their first twelve months. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who seeks to build upon our recent fundraising success while also having the room to be creative, to grow as a development professional, to build and foster a development team for the long-term, and to help lead at organization aimed at addressing one of the most important public policy issues of our time.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
CAIR Coalition is seeking an energetic and results-driven fundraiser to become our Director of Development. The ideal candidate won't be afraid to roll up their sleeves and help CAIR Coalition expand its in-house fundraising program and infrastructure. The Director is responsible for creating revenue-generating opportunities and developing relationships that will diversify and grow CAIR Coalition’s base of financial support. The Director must be a strong communicator, proven innovator, and successful fundraiser who is motivated by CAIR Coalition’s mission and the opportunity to be part of a growing organization. The Director must be able to set strategic priorities and create a development plan that accounts for possible outcomes and performance benchmarks for individual, government, foundation, firm and corporate funding. The Director would be a senior staff member that serves as part of the Management Team. This is a full-time position located in Washington, D.C.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a pivotal leadership role at CAIR Coalition, responsible for working closely with the Executive Director, Board Chair, Board Fundraising Committee Chair, and the entire Board of Directors to develop and implement an innovative and proactive fundraising strategy.
Fundraising – Major Donors/Foundations/Government Grants/E-Fundraising
- Create and implement strategies to meet aggressive annual and long-term fundraising goals, including the diversification of funding streams
- Identify, initiate, nurture, and maintain close relationships with all Defenders of Dignity
- Personally solicit and secure contributions from individual high level donors maintaining an active portfolio of 250 plus donors at all times
- Recommend and implement creative strategies and tactics to further steward current and prospective donors while personally stewarding all major donors and major donor prospects
- Support the Executive Director to identify and close $10k plus gifts from current, lapsed and prospective donors
- Schedule and attend in-person meetings with current major donors and major donor prospects with a goal of ten per month
- Oversee, manage and execute at least six “Nights for Justice” events in 2020 – our house party major donor recruitment series that launched in 2018
- Oversee and execute an aggressive e-fundraising strategy, ensuring that a minimum of two e-appeals are sent out per month to engage current, lapsed and prospective donors
- Working in tandem with the Management Team, create a new short-term and long-term strategy for engaging donors via social media platforms
- Oversee all grant-related work on behalf of CAIR Coalition, including: identifying and maintaining an active list of 100 foundation prospects, sending LOI’s, submitting grant applications, grant reports, and any follow-up necessary with these institutional funders
- Working under the supervision of the Executive Director, serve in a lead role to ensure all materials and deadlines are achieved for government contracts.
- Working in tandem with the Executive Director and members of the Management Team, solicit and steward gifts from law firms
- Draft, manage and execute the Annual End of Year Printed Appeal and E-Appeal series
- Serve as the primary and direct contact for the Board of Directors around development activities, working in tandem with each to encourage their own personal giving and fundraising efforts.
- Schedule, oversee and participate in calls every other month with the Board Fundraising Committee, including preparing and sending agendas in advance of each meeting
- Prepare extensive and detailed fundraising status reports for the Board of Directors to be presented at each in-person Board Meeting alongside the Executive Director
- As requested by the Executive Director, participate in Board Executive Committee Meetings
- Support Board Members and other supporters around any cultivation events they might host, including Nights for Justice events
Event Management – Annual Awards Gala
- Working in tandem an outside event planner and under the supervision of the Executive Director, oversee sCAIR Coalition’s Awards Gala, which is traditionally held in the fall.
Stewardship & Cultivation
- Lead the production of CAIR Coalition’s Annual Impact Report for donors
- Effectively manage and track donor cultivation activities and provide regular monthly reports to the Executive Director and Management Team
- Call all donors at $500 plus within 24 hours of their gift being made
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant tax laws and their impact on charitable giving, including regular attendance at educational and professional seminars
- In tandem with the Executive Director, oversee and execute a personalized thank you process for all Defenders of Dignity
- Rapidly and personally respond to donor inquiries and concerns when they arise, always using a customer service approach and attitude in doing so
- Oversee data collection and data management to ensure that CAIR Coalition’s database (Every Action) is updated on a daily basis and that donor records are as current as possible
- Update the internal Moves Management Plan on a daily basis
Management & Supervision
- Manage and guide development staff to ensure that development strategies and projects are executed successfully
- Conduct weekly in-person check-ins with development staff
- Identify and recommend opportunities for professional growth, including seminars and classes to further enhance knowledge of best fundraising and stewardship practices
- Lead by example, always demonstrating clear fundraising success and results on behalf of the organization
- Minimum 5-7 years’ experience fundraising
- A clear record of personally securing individual major gifts ranging from $1,000 - $25,000
- Strong commitment and passion for the mission, vision, and work of CAIR Coalition and a desire to continually broaden and deepen the organization's impact through fundraising
- High professional standards and ability to provide evidence of success in meeting or exceeding stated goals
- Be a confident, highly motivated, dynamic, and results-driven innovator, with a high degree of integrity
- Ability to lead, excel, and work as part of a senior leadership team in a fast-paced, diverse, and results-oriented culture
- Strong organizational skills and outstanding attention to detail
- High degree of flexibility, resilience, and a positive attitude
- Prior success working closely with and building relationships with organizational funders, high net-worth individuals, C-Suite executives, and a Board of Directors
- Have a team-oriented approach
- Be able to quickly learn and become proficient in CAIR Coalition’s database, Every Action, along with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
