The Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights (CAIR) Coalition is looking for an undergraduate student to support our staff in a Cross-Program internship. The student will assist the Detained Adults Program through the Legal Orientation Program (LOP), the SAFE (Safety and Fairness for Everyone) Network, and the NQRP Program (National Qualified Representation Program). In addition, the intern will assist the Detained Children’s Program. The internship will provide a robust view of the services provided by CAIR Coalition. A full list of responsibilities and requirements can be found below.

Start: Can depend on intern’s availability

Time Commitment: Part-time (15-20 hours a week); preferably Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

General Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparation and breakdown of weekly detention visit
  • Following jail visits, enter intakes of detainees onto our client databases
  • Conduct criminal history searches
  • Research political, economic and social conditions in countries for both pro se applicants and clients
  • Compile and translate evidence and other documents to support both pro se applicants and clients
  • Prepare documents for filing in immigration court
  • Observe immigration court hearings in Baltimore

Occasional Responsibilities:

  • Go on a jail visit to one or more of the facilities we visit
    • Contingent on background check for Detained Children’s Program
  • Interview clients and their family members to gather details for their immigration case
  • Attend training opportunities within the office


  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must be able to pass background check (program specific)
  • Spanish proficiency is required; other languages is a plus
  • Ability to work with diverse populations (adults and children)
