Frederick* is a 36-year-old English-speaking man from Jamaica currently detained in Farmville. Throughout his early life, Frederick was verbally attacked and beaten by Jamaican police and community members for being bisexual. While in Jamaica, Frederick was mutilated with a machete and beaten unconscious. Frederick fled to the United States in 2010 when Jamaican police threatened to take his life.

Though Frederick received LPR status in 2015, Frederick lost status and was transferred to ICE custody when he was brought into a fraud scheme by his cousin. Frederick was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud and of a controlled substance charge. Frederick fought to remain in the United States and is now back at the trial level after remand from the BIA, which found the IJ did not properly consider the risk of torture Frederick would face in Jamaica. In wrapping up his immigration proceedings, Frederick is looking for an attorney to represent him in seeking deferral of removal through the Convention Against Torture.

Frederick has a master calendar (scheduling) hearing for October 20, 2020 in Arlington, VA.

Timeline: As of October 21st, there are currently no scheduled hearings in this case. In response to COVID-19, the courts currently permit attorneys to attend all hearings telephonically.
