Alessandra* is a 23-year-old survivor of physical and sexual abuse from El Salvador. Alessandra fled to the United States in 2014 after members of a gang attacked her, raped her, and threatened her repeatedly. The gang began extorting Alessandra’s grandparent in 2012, but when they were no longer able to pay the gang began threatening and attacking Alessandra and her siblings. Alessandra’s sister and brother both fled to the US in 2013.

After Alessandra’s siblings escaped, the gang tried to force Alessandra to participate in illegal activities and physically attacked her when she refused. One of the gang members raped Alessandra and several gang members threatened to kill her when they found out she became pregnant as a result.

To protect herself and her unborn child, Alessandra fled to the US. After arriving in the US Alessandra was in the care and custody of the Office of the Refugee and Resettlement (ORR) for almost a month. Then Alessandra reunited with her mother in Maryland. Alessandra then began a relationship with her boyfriend and moved in with him. They had a baby together, but Alessandra’s boyfriend became extremely abusive to her. One night, Alessandra tried to defend herself against her abusive boyfriend and she called the police. Although Alessandra was trying to defend herself, the police arrested her and transferred her to ICE custody.

Alessandra is now looking for an attorney to represent her in seeking Asylum, Withholding of Removal, protection under the Convention Against Torture (CAT), and a U-visa.
