Family Stays Together Thanks to CAIR Coalition

by Kathryn M. Doan, Esq.

Originally from Jamaica, Samuel (name changed) has been married to his U.S. citizen wife for over 15 years ago. A loving husband and devoted father of two U.S. citizens sons, DR worked hard in the refrigeration industry to support his family while also pursuing his avocation as a musician. .

In July 2012, Staff Attorney Amar Nair, met with Samuel at the Worcester County Detention Center where he was detained. By this time, Samuel felt helpless. As he explains, “When CAIR Coalition met with me I was just shy couple of days to signing my deportation. I had given up because I could not pay for an attorney and the judge said she would not continue my case anymore. If not for CAIR,  I would have been deported by now.”

Two weeks after CAIR Coalition, staff attorney, Claudia Cubas, took his case and filed an application for cancellation of removal in the Baltimore Immigration Court. After several weekend trips to the Eastern Shore and meeting with Samuel's  family including his wife, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and children, Claudia was able to win his case on October 29, 2012.

On November 2, 2012, Samuel was released from ICE custody and he was able to reunite with his family and children returning to being active and involved father for his two teenage sons. Thanks to CAIR Coalition, there is now one less family forced to suffer the trauma and hardship of losing a beloved member to deportation.
