CAIR Coalition Legal Fellow in the Virginia Lawyer Addressing Ethical Issues in the Representation of Noncitizen Criminal Defendants

by CAIR Coalition Staff

Morgan Macdonald, legal fellow for CAIR Coalition's Virginia Justice Program, published an article in the February 2015 edition of the Virginia Lawyer addressing defense attorneys' ethical and constitutional obligations when representing noncitizen defendants. The article discusses the distinct legal and strategic challenges that arise for defense attorneys representing noncitizens and the obligation defense attorneys have to accurately advise their clients about the immigration consequences of criminal case dispositions. CAIR Coalition's Alyssa Spina created an infographic illustrating the disproportionate impact that immigrants can face when convicted of a criminal charge that appears with the article.  The article is accessible here.
