Comunidades Unidas or Community Conversations Project is designed to provide holistic and culturally competent workshops on immigrants’ rights, defenses against deportation, as well as rights against gender and domestic violence. Our Gender-Based Violence workshop promotes awareness of gender-based violence and its impacts on legal status and eligibility for relief against deportation. All presentations include information for families through partnerships with local schools, community centers, and other nonprofits. Workshops are a safe space for community members to learn important information about:
- Legal rights of noncitizens in the US;
- Immigration court, how to get to court, what to do in court;
- How to interact with the police or officials;
- Typical defenses to deportation;
- Finding free or reduced cost legal help; and
- Rights against gender and domestic violence.
CAIR Coalition staff generally team with law firm attorneys in putting on information sessions. Doing so provides assistance to our staff, allows for a bilingual presentation (with CAIR Coalition staff presenting in Spanish), and brings the law firm attorney out into the community. Prior to the informational session, CAIR Coalition staff meets with the law firm attorneys to go over the information session and provides background training.
If you are a community organizer interested in having a workshop for your community or if you are a law firm interested in partnering with CAIR Coalition on a community workshop please contact the Coordinator for Community Conversations, Maricelly Malave, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
